The Main Functions of Computer Memory

the main functions of computer memory
Computer Memory

The principal and central function of computer memory is to store all data on the device. This also performs certain other functions, depending on the type of data, besides processing the data. Some of its functions apply to storage only because of its primary function in storage, such as RAM, ROM, data storage, hard drives, and flash memory. Each carries out the function necessary to keep the machine going.

RAM:

Random Access Memory (RAM) is a type of memory which is used by the processor, A processor stores the data into the RAM to get quick access over the data. It takes a lot of time for processor to go to the Hard Disk and seek for files that user want to open, that is why it stores the data into RAM, which is frequently being used by the processor to save time.

Once you Shut Down your computer all the data stored into the RAM gets deleted and processor needs to load all the information into the RAM upon Starting this is the reason why it take time to successfully boot up

Hard Drive:

A hard drive is the main source of storage in a computer. A hard disk is the foundation of storing data inside a device. This provides storage of computer and user files, which contains images which documents from your operating system. Technically speaking, a hard drive is a magnetic-coated spinning disk, similar to the magnetic ribbons used to hold cassette records. There is one moving arm that reads and copies all the data, so you can transfer the new data from the spinning disk or open files from the hard disk.

Flash Memory:

Flash memory is the common term used for Electronically erasable-programmable-read-only-memory (EEPROM). This is used in the video game cards of the computer, and also to store some important system information. This is not like the other memory styles that erase or copy bit-byte data, but instead EEPROM is used to alter data in bit groups, making it a easy and flexible choice for devices such as memory sticks and cameras where the stored data frequently varies from time to time.

ROM:

Read Only Memory is called ROM. ROM generated data is used to track the device's most basic functionalities, such as start-up, operation of device fans and peripheral detection. And, as the name suggests, the software or users can't alter these details. All recorded stays over there after the computer had been turned off. ROM is a non-volatile memory source, similar to the flash memory and the hard drives. Being non-volatile means that the data stays in place even when the power is off.
